Introduction

Do you want your work to matter? Do you want to use your skills to make a difference, not just a living? Do you want to improve millions of lives, including your own?

Living Goods works to reinvent how we improve the lives of the under-served. We think big, but operate lean and nimble. We train community health workers to bring life saving products and health services to people’s doorsteps.

We also transform community health through mobile phones.  Using the disruptive power of mobile technology, we’ve equipped and deployed over 8,000 community health workers across Africa.  These community health workers treat common illnesses like pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria.  They also provide primary healthcare to 6 million people at a fraction of the cost of doctors and nurses.  And they’ve reduced child mortality by 27 percent.

The secret to our success is a winning team.  One that enables people to bring their ideas and creativity to work every day.  If you work well in a dynamic collaborative culture, set high standards, meet challenges with determination and a have a sense of humor, come work for Living Goods!

Living Goods Revenue Model

Nearly 85 percent Living Goods’ revenue comes from private foundations and individual donors and most of it is unrestricted. This allows us to be mission driven rather than money driven.  It also allows us to test new ideas and to hone our programs to improve community health.

Our revenue model also gives us a solid foundation from which to grow.  And grow we have!  We’ve grown 30 percent each year for the past 5 years.  Our annual budget this year is $20 million and we will grow another 50 percent in the next two years.  This past spring, we received a $35 million challenge grant from the TED Audacious Ideas project and a collection of major donors. Other core partners include the Gates Foundation, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, and USAID.

The Opportunity

We want you to be the conductor of our business development orchestra.  You will lead our efforts to raise money from multilateral and bilateral donors, private foundations, major donors, and sources we haven’t even though of yet.

But don’t worry.  As the pilot you won’t be flying solo.  A Development Director in charge of philanthropy, a Major Gifts Officer, and a Deputy Director, Business Development will be your copilots.  You’ll also have a steady crew of writers, business development managers, and development assistants.  Based in San Francisco, Kenya, and Uganda, these development professionals will keep your flights smooth and the skies blue.

Your Mission

Develop a shared strategy.   You will develop our global fundraising blueprint. Your plan will include an environmental scan of potential NGO and for-profit partners and target lists of prospective donors and fundraising goals from each source - like USAID, DfID, the Global Fund, the Gates Foundation and other sources we haven’t even thought of yet.

  • Raise our profile. We weave mobile tools and business practices like marketing and key performance indicators (KPI) into our work.  While we don’t expect you to sell Living Goods’ products, we do want you to sell our organization.  We look to you to open doors to new donors and NGO partners in Washington DC, New York, Europe, and around the world.
  • Lead the troops. You will guide a 7-person global team based in the US, Kenya, and Uganda. Your collaborative management style will enable you to help each of your team members develop their leadership skills.  Since you keep the goals of your team front and center, you’ll be able to identify opportunities for them to hone their fundraising and business development knowledge and skills.
  • Monitor the landscape.  You will work with technical and country teams to develop a global system to track prospective multilateral, bilateral, private, and individual donors.   You will guide your team in donor cultivation and stewardship .
  • Ensure winning proposals. You will lead proposal development teams to ensure submission of high-quality proposals that are aligned with the organization’s strategic priorities.  You will also hold debriefings with proposal teams to identify and document lessons learned and best practices for program development efforts.

  • Business development and fundraising creds.  You have a bachelor’s degree and 12+ years experience in business development. You are well versed in bi and multi-lateral funding mechanisms and procedures and knowledgeable about large private global health donors like the Gates Foundation.
  • Leadership skills.  You are able to develop and track fundraising goals and a shared strategy for business development and philanthropy.  You can infuse others with your passion for fundraising.  You have the intelligence to anticipate challenges and the wisdom to identify solutions.
  • Focus on results.  We want a Doer-Director.  You like to dream and explore but also get things done.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit.  You thrive in small to medium size, fast growing organizations.  The idea of building tools, systems, and processes entices you.  You are comfortable in a fast paced environment with fluid deadlines.
  • Connected.  You have relationships with donors and leaders of other NGOs that can partner with Living Goods on proposals.
  • Gravitas.  You are engaged and engaging.  You know how to get the ear of donors and influence their thinking.  When it comes to working the room, you’re a natural.
  • Collaborative spirit.  You actively listen and communicate.  You can connect easily with your team and gain their trust and respect.  You don’t hesitate to roll up your sleeves and pitch in.
  • Resourcefulness.  You know who to call for the inside scoop.  You’re able to identify partners for projects and outside consultants for proposal development when necessary.
  • Gets our model. Living Goods is a hybrid model.  We’re a nonprofit organization with a business minded approach.  We use business practices to achieve social goals.  Did we mention that we look for people who thrive in fast paced environments with fluid deadlines?
